Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture are part of an ancient system of techniques used to enhance the flow of vital energy within the body. Acupuncture has been practiced in China for several thousand years, its exact working mechanism, however, has remained a mystery.
According to ancient Chinese medical theory, the vital energy called qi or ch'i and pronounced "chee", flows through the body via 14 invisible pathways called meridians, and regulates all physical and mental processes. For qi flowing properly, the opposing forces within the body, called yin and yang, must be in balance. Running deep within the body's tissues and organs, the meridians surface at some 360 places, which are called acupuncture points. Each meridian corresponds to a specific organ or organ system such as the bladder or liver. All the acupuncture points along such meridians--also in the hands or feet--are in connection with the associated internal organ. Stimulating these points seems to balance and restore the flow of qi.
Acupuncture points can be stimulated by
- inserting and withdrawing ultra fine needles;
- pressure ('acupressure' without needles);
- laser beam;
- electricity;
- 'moxibustion' (applying a smoldering cone of herbal material to the acupuncture point); or
- a combination of these methods.
Western scientists assume that acupuncture --
- may trigger the release of natural pain-killing substances within the body called endorphins, thus blunting the perception of pain; and
- may alter the body's output of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine, and of inflammation-causing substances such as prostaglandins.
Over time, clinical experience has shown the pain-relieving effects and overall health benefits of acupuncture.
