Homeopathy

Like Cures Like

Homeopathy is a holistic medical science, which uses natural, non-toxic medicines to gently, yet powerfully stimulate the body's inherent healing capacities to cure illness and promote wellness.

The word homeopathy is derived from the Greek word homeos, meaning 'similar'. The Law of Similars was first recorded by Hippocrates, the father of medicine, who in the 4th century B.C. in Greece, noticed that herbs given in a low dose tend to cure the same symptoms as they produce in a large toxic dose.

In 1790, a German physician by the name of Samuel Hahnemann, rediscovered the same observation. Disillusioned with the theories and practice of 18th century medicine, Hahnemann had retired from practice in 1782. In his struggle to find effective, non-toxic medicines he conducted an experiment upon himself. Taking a sizeable dose of the bark of the Cinchona tree, he found himself developing typical symptoms of malarial fever, the very disease the drug reputed to cure. By then diluting the bark he found that it could also cure the symptoms.

Hahnemann spent the next six years systematically testing the observation on himself and fellow physicians. He found that any substance that can cause illness, when given in a large dose, can also stimulate the body to cure a similar illness when given in an extremely dilute dose.

Through carefully-controlled clinical trials, Hahnemann tested and brought to light more than 100 new medicines and a new medical science, which he called "homeopathy".

In the 200 years from Hahnemann to the present, more than 3,000 additional homeopathic medicines have likewise been added to this homeopathic pharmacy.

Healing The Whole Person

Homeopathic physicians recognize, observe, and support the interrelationship between the physical, mental and the emotional levels.

Prescriptions in homeopathy are based on an assessment of all of these correlations and all of the individual patient's symptoms, including those that are unique to that individual, and not solely on a diagnosis of a specific disease.

The homeopathic physician treats the individual as a unique integrated whole. His task is to match the total picture of symptoms and individual characteristics of the patient with a homeopathic remedy, which will complement and stimulate the inherent wisdom of the body to heal itself.

Homeopathy's Significance Today

Today homeopathy is well-established and widely practiced in Europe, South America and India. In France alone, more than 17.5 million people see only homeopathic physicians for all of their health care needs, as homeopathy encompasses all areas including prevention, acute and chronic conditions.

There were at one time in the United States 110 homeopathic hospitals and 22 homeopathic medical schools. Today there are no homeopathic hospitals and only two medical schools, but interest in homeopathy is experiencing a resurgence.

There is a growing consensus in the United States that the massive expenditures on medical research have failed to demonstrate any significant improvement in society's level of health. The incidence of major chronic diseases, like cancer, diabetes and heart disease has continued to climb, and medical costs have soared beyond the means of the average person. More and more doctors and the public at large are searching for alternatives.

Complementing the "localistic", symptom-oriented approach to disease with the "holistic", the whole person approach using natural, effective, non-toxic remedies, offers an alternative.

DISCLAIMER: The extent of the response to treatment varies from patient to patient, even with similar diagnosis as the internal bodily environment is unique to each individual patient.
