Treatment of Allergies/Sensitivities

Various studies report that 30% to 50% of Americans suffer from symptoms of allergy and sensitivity. Sensitivity means that the body is reacting in some way to a substance in the environment.

This reaction can come from a variety of mechanisms, but they all result in the release of histamine, and other inflammation causing chemicals. If they are released in the mucous membranes of the nose and eyes, there will be hay fever symptoms; if in the lungs, wheezing or cough; if in the skin, a rash, and so on.

Why are some people allergic to certain substances, called allergens, and other people do not react to the same substances? The allergen alone cannot be the culprit. There is an underlying cause, which we believe is the impairment of the body's barrier functions.

The body has the following major barriers: The skin and the mucous membranes, for example of the head (sinuses, eyes), of the lungs and of the intestinal tract (small intestine, colon). These barriers are part of the body's very complex defense system. Their function is to keep foreign particles from entering the body. Healthy barrier functions do not allow allergens to penetrate, therefore no allergic reaction will occur.

At the Issels Medical Center we have a two-pronged, very personalized, strategy against allergies/sensitivities that aims to:

  1. Diagnose and eliminate the causal factors for the impairment of the barrier functions, and restore barrier functions to normal;

  2. Determine the allergens, desensitize the body against these allergens, control the symptoms.

The treatment of Allergies/Sensitivities at the Issels Medical Center, called Natural Elimination of Allergy Therapy (N.E.A.T.) was further developed by the senior of the group of 7 physicians, Dr. Konrad Kail, who has 25 years of experience in integrating conventional and natural medicine.

Dr. Kail, an authority on electrodermal screening for diagnosis, is one of the 18 advisors to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. He completed a 5 year study on the Natural Elimination of Allergy Therapy (N.E.A.T.) which was published in Alternative Medicine Review (April 2001), a peer-reviewed, medline reviewed journal.

Outcomes:

87.2 % of 100 patients that were studied reported good to excellent results. Natural Elimination of Allergy Therapy (N.E.A.T) was equally successful in all ages, sexes and races. Patients are symptom-free 3 - 6 years after primary series of treatment. The diagnosis is done by electrodermal screening (EDS). Over 1,500 generic items were tested from home environment.

The treatment is all-natural, non-invasive. It uses:

  • acupressure (no needles);
  • homeopathy; and
  • energy balancing technique.

No long-term avoidance is necessary (24 hours). Little or no side effects have been observed.

Diagnosis:

In order to control allergy, it is essential that offending substances be identified. We recommend --

  • IgE RAST blood tests for inhalant and contact allergens, and
  • IgG RAST or MICRO-ELISA tests for foods

These tests measure antibodies and are the best for identifying true allergy. Sensitivity is diagnosed when symptoms are present, but the patient tests negative for allergies. We recommend electrodermal screening (EDS) for sensitivity testing, and look at a correlation between RAST or ELISA and EDS.

In addition to the diagnostic procedures to identify the allergens, extensive complementary diagnostic tools are used to determine the underlying causes for the impairment of the barrier functions.

All the diagnostic findings establish the basis for the individualized allergy treatment protocol at the Issels Medical Center.

Treatment:

Once identification of allergens has been accomplished --

  1. The first step of treatment consists of avoidance, which means minimizing exposure to substances causing allergies. Air purifiers and filters, as well as water filters, are useful. Dietary restrictions and rotation diets for allergens may also be used.

  2. The second very important step of treatment that goes hand-in-hand with the avoidance of allergens, is the elimination of root causes for the impairment of barrier functions.

  3. The third step is restoration of the barriers to normal functioning, by:

    • detoxification methods,
    • herbal medicine,
    • nutraceuticals,
    • enzymes, and
    • other natural methods according to individual requirements

The aim is to ensure good mucous membrane protection in the lungs and the sinuses; normal skin function; good digestion, especially of protein to prevent food allergies, etc.

  4. After barrier functions are restored, the fourth step of treatment is desensitization against allergens according to the Natural Elimination of Allergy Therapy (N.E.A.T.) protocol. With the help of the electrodermal screen patients are tested for more than 3,000 allergens, and desensitized against the offending allergens.

Desensitization:

In conventional medicine desensitization is accomplished through "allergy shots", which try to convince the patient's immune system to quit reacting. However, it takes a long time to convince the immune system.

The Natural Elimination of Allergy Therapy (N.E.A.T) protocol, which is non-invasive, uses energy balancing (acupressure and homeopathy) to convince the brain to quit reacting, which happens within 24 hours, and the brain directs the immune system.

Experience in our clinic shows good long-term results that have lasted over 10 years, after a treatment of 6 to 8 weeks.

Symptom Control:

Before patients are symptom-free, symptom control is a very important factor. This is accomplished with herbal/nutritional supplements. These natural remedies treat hay fever, rhinitis, sinusitis, rash and other allergy/sensitivity symptoms, usually with less side effects than over the counter or prescription medications. Patients only need these until they have been desensitized and rarely thereafter.

* DISCLAIMER: The extent of the response to treatment varies from patient to patient, even with similar diagnosis as the internal bodily environment is unique to each individual patient.
