Amino Acid and Essential Fatty Acid Analysis

Amino Acids are the "building blocks" of the body. Besides building cells and repairing tissue, they form antibodies to combat invading bacteria & viruses; they are part of the enzyme & hormonal system; carry oxygen throughout the body and participate in muscle activity. There are 22 known amino acids that are formed when protein is broken down by digestion. Eight are essential, which means they cannot be produced by the body. The rest are non-essential. They can be produced by the body with proper nutrition.

Essential Fatty Acids, or EFAs are fatty acids that cannot by synthesized by the body from other fatty acids and must be obtained from food. These are the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. The ideal intake ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids is between 1:1 and 4:1. The usual American diet only provides a ratio of 10:1 and 25:1.

EFAs support the cardiovascular, immune, nervous and reproductive systems. The human body needs EFAs to manufacture and repair cell membranes, enabling the cells to obtain optimum nutrition and expel harmful waste products. A primary function of EFAs is the production of prostaglandins, which regulate body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, blood clotting, and play a role in immune function by regulating inflammation and encouraging the body to fight infection.

EFA deficiency and Omega 6/3 imbalance is linked with serious health conditions, such as cancer, insulin resistance, heart attacks, asthma, and a variety of chronic degenerative diseases.

Maintaining the proper levels of amino acids and essential fatty acids is one of the objectives of the treatment programs at the Issels Medical Center.
